William married Mary Beth Supinger, an actress, on December 2, 1971, and the couple separated in 1982. Hurt had an affair with Sandra Jennings during the marriage, and she gave birth to his son, Alex, in 1983. After William and Mary Beth separated, he and Sandra went to South Carolina (which allows common-law marriages), and when they divorced, Jennings sued Hurt in New York, attempting to have the relationship recognised as a common-law marriage. Because New York did not recognise common-law marriage and refused to recognise one that occurred in another state, the court decided in William’s favour. Hurt later dated Marlee Matlin, his co-star in “Children of a Lesser God,” and when she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film, Hurt congratulated her.In 1987, during the filming of the film (which was Matlin’s debut), he allegedly questioned her, “What makes you believe you’re deserving of it?
