What are the seven deadly sins?

Envy, gluttony, greed or avarice, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath are the seven deadly sins according to Christian tradition. The seven deadly sins are listed below, along with their definitions.

1. Lust

lust Lust is a strong desire or passion, particularly for sexual pleasures.

“Flee also youthful lusts,” the Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:22, “but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace…”

Job 31:1, Matthew 5:28, Philippians 4:8, James 1:14-15, 1 Peter 2:11, and 1 John 2:16 are all verses in the Bible that address lust.

By regulating passion and channelling it for the benefit of others, chastity or self-control cures lust.

2. Gluttony

gluttony is a condition in which a person consumes an excessive amount of food or drink on a regular basis.

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it to the glory of God,” says 1 Corinthians 10:31.

Psalm 78:17-19, Philippians 3:19-20, Proverbs 23:1-3, Proverbs 23:19-21, and 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 are other Bible allusions.

Temperance cures gluttony by establishing a desire to be healthy, making one capable of serving others.

3. Greed

Greed is defined as an inordinate desire for material stuff.

“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be satisfied with such things as you have,” the Bible states in Hebrews 13:5. ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you,’ He has promised.

4. Sloth

Sloth is an excessive laziness or the failure to act and utilize one’s talents.

Proverbs 13:4, Proverbs 24:33-34, Romans 12:11-13, Colossians 3:23, and 2 Thessalonians 3:10 are all verses in the Bible that reference sloth.

Slothfulness is cured by diligence or zeal, which prioritises the interests of others over a life of ease and enjoyment.

5. Wrath

Wrath is a powerful emotion of rage and hatred directed towards another person.

“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God,” says Romans 12:19, “because it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

Psalm 37:8, Proverbs 14:29, Proverbs 15:1, Ephesians 4:26-27, Colossians 3:8, and James 1:19-20 are some other Bible verses.

Patience alleviates rage by allowing one to first comprehend the needs and desires of others before acting or speaking.

6. Envy

Envy is the strong desire to obtain something that someone else has.

In Proverbs 14:30, the Bible says, “A sound heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones.”

Job 5:2, Psalm 37:1, Proverbs 24:19-20, Ecclesiastes 4:4, Galatians 5:26, and James 3:14-16 are other biblical scriptures that reference envy.

Kindness alleviates jealousy by prioritising the desire to help others over the drive to dominate them.

7. Pride

Pride is an exaggerated picture of oneself that is unconcerned for others.

“…Let not the mighty man boast of his might…but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me,” Jeremiah 9:23-24 reads in the Bible.

Proverbs 8:13, Proverbs 16:18, Romans 12:16, 1 Corinthians 13:4, Galatians 6:3, and James 4:6-7 are all scriptures that discuss pride.

Humility heals pride by reducing ego and boastfulness, allowing for a service-oriented mentality.
