The Abortion Pill

What is the abortion pill?

The abortion pill, commonly known as medication abortion, is a safe and efficient means to stop an early pregnancy.

How does the abortion pill work?

The term “abortion pill” refers to the use of two distinct drugs to terminate a pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol.

To begin, you must take a tablet known as mifepristone. To develop correctly during pregnancy, a hormone called progesterone is required. Mifepristone inhibits the growth of a pregnancy by blocking the body’s natural progesterone.

Then, either straight away or up to 48 hours later, you take the second drug, misoprostol. To empty your uterus, this medicine causes cramping and bleeding. It’s kind of like having a really heavy, crampy period, and the process is quite similar to an early miscarriage. Call your nurse or doctor if you don’t experience any bleeding within 24 hours of taking the second pill.

Both drugs will be given to you at the health facility by your doctor or nurse. When and where you’ll take them depends on state regulations and your health center’s policies. Your doctor or nurse will provide you with specific instructions on when, where, and how to take your medications. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent infection.

How effective is the abortion pill?

The abortion pill has a high success rate. The efficacy of the treatment is determined by how far along you are in your pregnancy when you take it.

  • It works 94-98 times out of 100 for women who are 8 weeks pregnant or less.
  • It works 94-96 times out of 100 for women who are 8-9 weeks pregnant.
  • It works around 91-93 times out of 100 for women who are 9-10 weeks pregnant. When you’re given an extra dose of medicine, it usually works 99 times out of 100.
  • It works roughly 87 out of 100 times for women who are 10-11 weeks pregnant. It works 98 out of 100 times if you are given an extra dose of medicine.

The abortion pill is typically effective, but if it isn’t, you can take extra medicine or undergo an abortion in a clinic.

When can I take the abortion pill?

You may be eligible to receive a pharmaceutical abortion up to 77 days (11 weeks) following the first day of your last menstruation, depending on where you reside. You can get an in-clinic abortion to stop your pregnancy if it has been 78 days or more from the first day of your last menstruation.

Why do people choose the abortion pill?

The type of abortion you select is entirely dependent on your own preferences and circumstances. Some people choose pharmaceutical abortion since it does not need a procedure at a doctor’s office. You can have your medication abortion at home or somewhere else that is convenient for you. You may choose who you want to be with or do it alone for your abortion. Many individuals believe pharmaceutical abortion is more “natural” and less intrusive than a miscarriage since it is akin to a miscarriage.

Your doctor, nurse, or staff at the health facility can assist you in determining which type of abortion is appropriate for you.

What is the RU-486 abortion Pill and how does it work?

RU-486 is the old name for mifepristone, which is one of the drugs used in medication abortions. RU-486 is now known as “Mifeprex” or “the abortion pill” (the brand name for mifepristone).

In the 1980s, RU-486 was created. Since 1987, it has been used safely in Europe, and since 2000 in the United States.

RU-486 inhibits the production of a hormone that your body need to keep a pregnancy going. It works best when used with misoprostol, a drug that produces uterine bleeding to empty your uterus.

The RU-486 abortion pill is a safe and successful approach to terminate a pregnancy in its early stages.
