Radcliffe knew he wanted to be an actor since he was five years old, and his first acting part came when he was ten years old, in 1999. In BBC One’s two-part TV production of Charles Dickens’ novel of the same name, he played a young David Copperfield.
Harry Potter Success and Salaries
In 2000, Radcliffe was called to audition for the title role in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone). He was offered the part after a series of callback auditions and an eight-month wait. It would be the breakthrough that catapulted him to international fame and fortune.
Daniel allegedly earned a $1 million payment for the first Harry Potter picture, which was released in 2001. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second film in the series, was released a year later and had a similar box office success. It also netted Radcliffe a $3 million fee. Although such figures may appear hefty to most of us, they pale in comparison to the sums that Radcliffe would be paid for the subsequent films in the series.
Harry Potter Salary and Earnings
Daniel Radcliffe made at least $100 million from the franchise in total, including basic pay, profit participation, recurring royalties, and other sources of revenue. His basic compensation for the final instalment in 2011 was $33 million, equivalent to about $40 million today.
Other Work
Daniel’s early career was mostly concentrated on the Harry Potter franchise, however he did have other parts during that time. In 2001, he made his feature debut in The Taylor of Panama, starring Pierce Brosnan. He starred in The Play What I Wrote on the West End in 2002, December Boys in 2007, and My Boy Jack on television in 2007.
Daniel Radcliffe, then 17 years old, made his stage debut in the drama Equus in 2006, the play’s first revival since its first run in 1973. Alan Strang, a stable boy with a passion with horses, is played by Radcliffe. It was a huge break from his normal adolescent parts, and it demonstrated to the rest of the world that he has the acting skills to broaden his range. The show’s advance sales reached £1.7 million, and Radcliffe’s appearance drew a lot of attention ahead of time, thanks to a naked scene in which he featured. His performance was well-received, and critics were impressed by the depth of his anti-type portrayal.
He returned to the stage shortly after the Harry Potter franchise ended in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, where he earned rave reviews. He made his post-Harry Potter cinematic debut in 2012 with The Woman in Black. He is still active on stage and in cinema.
Personal Life
Radcliffe has produced many pieces of poetry under a pseudonym in addition to his acting performances. He revealed in 2008 that he suffers from a slight form of dyspraxia, a motor skill problem that causes him to lose his coordination. He divides his time between Fulham, London, and his house in Lower Manhattan’s West Village.
Radcliffe has backed a number of initiatives, many of which concern children’s rights and healthcare. He is an ardent supporter of equal rights for LGBT kids and the prevention of suicide.
Despite making a small fortune from the Harry Potter films, Radcliffe claims to have spent very little of it. He considers himself fortunate in that he never needs to worry about money and can pick and choose whatever projects he works on. Radcliffe aspires to direct and produce films in the future.
