Calicut University
Calicut University is the largest university in Kerala. Established in the year 1968, it is the second university to be established in Kerala. The university aims to nurture excellence in education and research in its catchment areas of northern Kerala, which has historically been designated as the periphery of Kerala’s educational map. The university emphasizes on promoting quality human resources and productive research that benefits both local communities and wider humanity. This university was created through the government scheme to the University of Kerala. As per the plan, the four postgraduate departments of the University of Kerala operating in Calicut were annexed into the new university along with four constituent colleges spread over seven northern districts. As the motto ‘Nirmaya Karmanashree’, the university is capable of facing all challenges and emerging as the largest residential cum affiliate university in Kerala. With 30 postgraduate departments and 426 colleges, it has become a center of hope and knowledge for hundreds of thousands of young men and women in Northern Kerala.

The university was built through the Government’s plan to the University of Kerala. As the motto ‘The Nirmaya Karmanashri’, the university is capable of facing all challenges and emerging as the largest university in Kerala.
With 34 postgraduate and research departments, 3 centers, 11 chairs and 394 affiliated colleges, it has become a center of hope and knowledge for hundreds of thousands of young men and women in Kerala.
The University campus at Tenipalam, 24 km south of Calicut city, is the main center of educational activities. Most of the teaching and research departments are located here: Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Administration Block, Shiksha Bhavan, School of Distance Education, UGC HRD Center, Educational Multimedia Research Center, University Library, Central Science Block and Guest House. Departments in the main campus include Arabic, Botany, Biotechnology, Women’s Studies, Chemistry, Commerce and Management Studies, Computer Science, Education, English, Hindi, History, Political Science, Mass and Journalism, Life Sciences, Library and Information Sciences Huh. Life Long Learning and Extension, Malayalam and Kerala Studies, Mathematics, Nanoscience and Technology, Philosophy, Physics, Physical Education, Psychology, Russian and Comparative Literature, Sanskrit, Folklore Studies, Statistics, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Sociology and Law. The University has two off-campus centers, one in Thrissur and the other specifically for tribal empowerment located in the Western Ghats region of the state. Apart from these, there are self-financing centers located in different parts of the jurisdiction. Information centers have been set up in all the five districts of our jurisdiction to facilitate better access to students.
To meet the challenges of the changing world, the university is offering traditional and advanced programs of study and research under the same umbrella. Administration through e-governance, computerization of exam, establishment of smart class rooms, modernization of laboratories, frontier lecture by renowned scholars and scientist, etc. are some of the innovative activities to mention especially.
The university has 394 colleges affiliated to it. Of these 102, 74 are in Kozhikode district, 74 in Thrissur district, 92 in Malappuram district, 71 in Palakkad district and 18 in Wayanad district. Inclusive development is our primary goal for excellence, providing opportunities to the least deprived and marginalized people and our strengths for it to the fullest use of all.
